Meet the Kokedama

Kokedama plants are unique, Japanese-style moss balls created using a clay rich soil blend that is covered with moss to help maintain its shape/ act as its case. All the elements used to make Kokedama balls are natural and organic matters. When caring for Kokedama ball plants you’ll need to consider its case- the moss, as well as the plant itself

Light

Kokedama plants prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the moss and leaves. Place them near a window with filtered light or in a well-lit room.

Water

Step 1: Submerge the moss ball portion of the Kokedama ball into water. Ensure that the foliage isn’t submerged into the water.

Step 2: Soak your kokedama ball for 1-2 minutes or until the bubbling stops.

Step 3: Gently squeeze the Kokedama Ball for excess water and place it in a colander for another 30 minutes. This step will ensure no dripping.

Step 4: Hang your Kokedama Ball in a medium-light zone in your home and mist your moss every 4-5 days. Remember that moss prefers slight dampness at all times.

Tip: Moss will turn brown if it's under watered or if it has been overwatered which prevents soil/moss breathability.

Tip: If your Kokedama ball feels light, then it's probably time for watering. (Tip within a Tip: Feel the weight of your Kokedama ball right after you water and a week after you water, this will help you get a better idea of when it's time to water. This same technique can be applied to potted house plants as well!)

   Common Problems Q&A

Why is my Kokedama plant wilting or looking unhealthy?

Kokedama plants require consistent moisture to thrive, and wilting or poor health often indicates that the moss ball is too dry. Check the moisture level by gently squeezing the moss. If it feels dry, soak it in water for 10-20 minutes. Additionally, ensure the plant is getting enough light (but not too much direct sunlight), as improper lighting can also cause stress.

How do I take care of my Kokedama plant during the winter months?

In winter, Kokedama plants typically need less frequent watering because they absorb moisture more slowly. Ensure the moss ball stays moist but not soggy. Place the plant in a spot with indirect light and away from cold drafts or heaters, which can cause the moss to dry out faster. If indoor humidity is low, misting the plant occasionally can help maintain moisture levels.

How do I replant or repot my Kokedama when the plant outgrows it?

To replant your Kokedama, gently remove the moss ball and untangle the roots. If the roots have grown too large or are circling around the moss, trim them slightly before reshaping the moss ball. If necessary, you can add fresh moss to support the plant's growth. Afterward, rewrap the moss with string or twine, ensuring the ball is compact and holds the roots in place.
